Fathers Day

Story of Origin, Facts and Jokes

On Fathers Day, you can read this story to your preschool kids:

Mrs. Dodd's was sitting in church one day listening to a Mother's Day sermon. She thought of her mum who had died giving birth to her sixth child. Oh, how she missed her mum. Then she thought of her dad who struggled single-handedly, to raise her and her 5 other siblings. She thought her dad was the Number One Dad in the whole wide world. Suddenly an idea came to mind:
"If we can celebrate Mothers Day, we can celebrate Fathers Day too".

So on her dad's birthday June 19, 1910 - that was a century ago - wow! 100 years ago, Mrs Dodd celebrated her dad's birthday and instead of saying "Happy Birthday" she said, "Happy Fathers Day".

Many who came to the party liked the idea and started to remember not only Mrs Dodd's dad but also other good dads on that special Father's Day. However, that special day for fathers took a long time to become popular. It was not until President Nixon of America who finally confirmed the 3rd Sunday of June as a national observance day of Father's Day in 1972 - about ___ years ago.(Fill in the blank). From then on, every 3rd Sunday of June was marked on the calendar as Father's Day.

The flowers for decorations on Father's Day are white and red roses. The white rose commemorated gratitude for a father who had died, and a red rose expressed thankfulness to one who was living.

Some kids don't have a Dad to celebrate this special day with. But there's a God whom you can call Heavenly Father. He loves and cares for all the little children. Those fatherless kids can still celebrate Father's Day and know that they are loved and cared for.

Some other kids have more then one person they call Dad. Their moms married again and they have 2 dads. So they can choose to celebrate Fathers Day twice.
